ASME Awards Nearly 70 Scholarships to Student Members

ASME Awards Nearly 70 Scholarships to Student Members ASME Awards Nearly 70 Scholarships to Student Members ASME Awards Nearly 70 Scholarships to Student MembersSept. 22, 2017 Each year, the ASME Scholarship Program helps ensure the future of the engineering profession by helping ease the financial burden for ASME student members who are pursuing their undergraduate and graduate degrees. This year, 69 student members were awarded more than $260,000 in scholarships through the ASME Foundation Scholarship Program and the ASME Auxiliary Scholarship Program. The ASME Scholarship Program offers more than 30 different scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, including the Kenneth Andrew Roe Scholarship, the ASME Foundation Scholar awards, the ASME/Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Scholarships, and the ASME Nuclear Division (NED) Scholarship.Trevor White of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute welches awarded ASMEs largest single-year scholarship, and named the K enneth Andrew Roe Scholar. The $13,000 scholarship, which is awarded to juniors and seniors studying mechanical engineering, was established in 1991 in memory of the former ASME president and chairman of the ASME Foundation. Trevor WhiteWhite, who is a senior studying mechanical engineering at RPI, served as president of the ASME student section at his university belastung year. In his scholarship acceptance essay, White said being selected as the Roe Scholar was an incredible honor and I am so grateful for it. This award comes at a time of financial uncertainty, (as) there have been many setbacks this past year and even more costs approaching in the future. Receiving this award solidifies my attendance at Rensselaer for my senior year and enables me to continue pursuing my research project, involve myself further in ASME, and invest more time narrowing my search for a career that I love.Another ASME student member, Jared Talamini, a junior at Wentworth Institute of Technology in B oston, was one of three student members who received $11,000 scholarships and were named ASME Foundation Scholars this year, along with Jason Bugarin of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Austin Kaul of the South Dakota School of Mines Technology. Jared TalaminiIn his scholarship acceptance essay, Talamini, who is enrolled in a five-year Bachelor of Science program in electromechanical engineering with a minor in manufacturing, said that in plus-rechnen to enabling him to continue his studies at Wentworth without interruption, being selected as an ASME Foundation Scholar has inspired him to get the most out of his college experience. My involvement in ASME has given me opportunities to gain internships, network with professionals, and learn new software and other skills that arent part of the curriculum, continued Talamini, who is chair of the student chapter at his university. This year I intend to do more with our chapter than our school has ever done in the past. One of his g oals this year is to take part in Accelerate, the universitys Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration among students, faculty, alumni and the local community in order to bring ideas and products to the marketplace.Danielle Petterson, from the University of South Florida, was one of two winners of the ASME/ Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Scholarships. Petterson won the undergraduate award, while Erin Hong of California State University, Northridge, received the post-graduate ASME/SHPE Scholarship. The program, now in its third year, provides two $5,000 awards each year to students who are members of both ASME and SHPE and have been actively involved in volunteer work to benefit others through at least one of the societies. Danielle PettersonThe past year had been a trying one for Petterson, who is a senior at the University of South Florida majoring in mechanical engineering and the activities chair for her schools AS ME student section. Already struggling to afford school and housing, Petterson lost her apartment in a fire last spring and has had to move eight times in the months that followed. Understandably, she describes her year so far as incredibly stressful, but she expressed in her acceptance essay that the ASME/SHPE Undergraduate Scholarship is relieving some of that pressure. In addition to unexpected emergency expenses that have affected her family, growing student loan debt left Petterson in constant panic about money and school, she wrote. Winning this scholarship from ASME has definitely lifted some of the weight off of my shoulders and has given me the little boost I needed to continue working toward my goals. I am so proud of this organization for valuing its student members and I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity.Joshua Smith, an ASME student member from Colorado State University, is one of three students who were each awarded a $5,000 ASME Nuclear Engineering Div ision (NED) Scholarship for the 2017-2018 school year. Also receiving NED Scholarships for this school year are Eric Zhong of California Polytechnic State University and Hank Costner from Utah State University. Each year, the division awards three scholarships to ASME student members who demonstrate a particular interest the design, analysis, development, testing, operation and maintenance of nuclear reactor systems and components, nuclear fusion, heat transport, nuclear fuels technology and radioactive waste. Joshua SmithSmith, who has been a board member of Colorado State Universitys ASME student section for two years, served as professional development chair last year and was recently elected vice chair of the student section. He is pursuing bachelors degrees in both mechanical engineering and bioengineering at Colorado State. This scholarship will help me, as well as my family, allowing me to focus on my studies and maintain the class load I need to complete my five-year program in four years, while totenstill gaining experience participating in internships, and ASME activities, he wrote. Your help will both minimize my own resulting debt and help me to focus on my studies, internships and organizing activities for my colleges ASME student chapter. During this last year at Colorado State, White said he would like to continue working in the laboratory in which he currently researches and develops low-cost portable aerosol samplers as well as continue helping coordinate ASME activities that enable students to connect with professionals in industry and academia.Other scholarships awarded by the Foundation include two $5,000 Garland Duncan Scholarships, which were given to Tamim Reza of the University of MichiganFlint and Mukul Sawant of Purdue University, and three $4,500 Willis F. Thompson Scholarships, which were awarded to Viktoria Meyerhoff of Indiana UniversityPurdue University, Tooba Ehtesham of the University of Houston, and Joseph Pechstein of the Mi lwaukee School of Engineering. To read the complete list of 2017-2018 ASME scholarship winners, visit the Scholarship Winners webpage on ASME.org.For more information on the ASME Scholarship Program, visit www.asme.org/career-education/scholarships-and-grants/scholarship-and-loans. Finland What the U.S. can learn from Finland about work

Finland What the U.S. can learn from Finland about workFinland What the U.S. can learn from Finland about workAnu Partanen, a journalist and the author ofThe Nordic Theory of Everything, moved from Finland to the U.S in 2008. She spoke withLaddersabout how work life compares between the two countries - and what the U.S. might learn. One of the things that surprised me most about working in the U.S. was the anxiety that many Americans feel about their work lives.Finns tend to have mora peace of mind about their work. In contrast, Americans tend to be much more worried about job security and balancing work with their personal lives. Here are some ways the countries differ in their approaches to work that help explain that divide and offer solutions.Power dynamicsIn Finland, as in all Nordic countries, universal policies provide certain rights to everyone, including health care, vacation time, and parental leave. These universal policies mean that employees are less dependent on their empl oyers and are able to have a more equal relationship with them.In the U.S., employers usually have much more power than employees. The companies often control the workers access to basic needs such as health care and leave. Its also easier to fire people in the U.S., which makes some employees feel like they could always be out of a job, and thus potentially out of health insurance. In Finland, you can fire employees if they dont do the work or if your company is doing poorly, but you have to have a real reason and make a case. Its bedrngnis as easy as just telling them to clear their desk. This gives employees more security.Hierarchical structureAmerican workplaces, especially in corporate environments, tend to be more hierarchical than in Finland.Of course, in the U.S. you have places like Silicon Valley, which are famous for their hoodies and chill atmospheres. But, overall, workplaces in Finland tend to be more relaxed.Finnish employees often have more independence to figure out t heir own schedules and approaches to problems. There also arent as many titles, and its easier for people to approach their bosses. This sense of equality often results in Finnish employees feeling more respected in their jobs.Work motivationFinnsoften think that there is a clear divide between their work life and the rest of their life.Americans are often much more passionate and ambitious about their careers.I admire the drive Americans have for their jobs. And now that Im used to the American pace of everything happening right now, the Finnish approach to work can be frustrating. But I wonder how much of that American drive is a result of workers dependence on their jobs and their fear of being left behind. This can drive them to work harder, longer hours that can leave them feeling burnt out and guilty about not being able to be home for their family. The Finnish approach frees people to work more because they want to. It also shows that people can be efficient even when they have m ore freedom to take the time they need without any repercussions or guilt. If you look at Finland, or any other Nordic country, you can see that they are wealthy, modern, well-organized societies with innovative, successful companies - even though their workers tend to have more time off than Americans.Time offIn Finland, all workers have the right to paid vacation, usually about five weeks a year, andalmost a full year of paid parental leave. All Nordic countries have more or less similar policies.Since everyone, including the boss, takes advantage of these policies, they areaccepted and seen as normal. In the U.S., vacation time and parental leavedepends on the employer, which can cause problems. If not all employers offer paid vacation time, it could end up punishing companies that do. People are also often hesitant to take the vacation time thats allotted to them because they are worried that it will reflect poorly on them.In fact, making vacation time ingrained into the culture c an help increase efficiency. When people have time to recuperate and rest, they come back and feel rejuvenated and more productive. The same is true for parental leave.A lack of paid parental leave or short leave times can createboth emotional and financial pressureson parents in the U.S. and cause them to be less efficient in their work because they are tired from taking care of a baby and consumed by worry and guilt about not being able to give enough time and effort either at work or at home. Some end up dropping out of the work force completely because finding balance is so hard.On the flip side, American women who do work tend to be in higher positions because they havent taken time off. In Nordic countries, more women work than in America, but their careers tend to stall because they take more time off for leave.Finland is now encouraging fathers to take more leave in an effort to increase gender equality even further.Work-life balanceTheres anAmerican myth that work-life balan ce must be negative for the employer. But Finland shows us that you can have work-life balance, and you can still have successful companies. The Finnish company Nokia was the worlds largest mobile phone company for more than a decade. KONE is one of the largest elevator manufacturers in the world. And mobile game companies such as Supercell, maker of Clash of Clans and Hay Day, and Rovio, creator of Angry Birds, are examples of new Finnish tech companies. If you look at Nordic countries as a whole, the tally of successful and innovative Nordic companies and brands is even more impressive Ikea, HM, Spotify, Ericsson, Volvo, Electrolux, Carlsberg, Minecraft, Novo Nordisk, Maersk, Fjllrven, and so on.When companies embrace practices that encourage more flexible work times, paid leave, and more independent employees, employees can be more efficient, more loyal, and more content. In the long term, Americans should look to enacting universal policies that will let workers better combine work w ith their personal lives. In the short term, they can start talking to their employers about the type of workplace they want to create to together. The Nordic countries offer a lot of evidence for what works.Anu Partanen is a journalist and the author ofThe Nordic Theory of Everything In Search of a Better Life.As told to Kirsten Salyer.

Harnessing Sole Power

Harnessing Sole Power Harnessing Sole Power Harnessing Sole PowerWhen was the last time you were scrambling to find a power switch because your smartphone, iPod, or tablet ran out of charge while hiking, camping, or at a tradeshow? Perhaps, just last summer? Now imagine a removable shoe insole that harnesses the kinetic energy of everyday walking to charge your devices whether you are out in the wilderness or on the show floor. That insole has been developed by two young Carnegie Mellon mechanical engineering graduates. What started off as a capstone mechanical engineering design project at Carnegie Mellon University, and then became a Kickstarter project, is now a Pittsburgh-based startup called SolePower (part of the incubator AlphaLab). Founded by Matthew Stanton and Hahna Alexander in monat des herbstbeginns 2012, Sole Power is now refining its energy-harvesting technology and aims to get to market by the end of 2014.According to the founders, SolePowers initial target market will be hikers, backpackers, and other outdoor enthusiasts who dont have any other option but solar power to charge their mobile electronics. SolePower, however, is also looking to partner with NGOs and mobile companies for case studies in developing regions, where portable electronics like cell phones act as lifelines.SolePowers current simulations indicate that one insole will last three years of walking. Image SolePowerOne Step at a TimeOriginally it was just a light up shoe so that students could be seen walking to and from campus at night and cars could easily see the students. It wasnt until we showed it off at Carnegie Melon alumni event in DC that we really saw a market for it defense industry, humanitarian organizations who could use it overseas, and outdoor enthusiasts who go hiking all the time, says co-founder and CEO Stanton.SolePowers mechanism and design is simple. It takes the linear movement of the step (the impression that occurs when the foot impacts the ground), con verts it into a rotational energy, which then spins a generator, explains Stanton. The insole captures this energy and stores it in an external battery that can be accessed via micro or mini USB ports. Whats unique about our technology is that we have created a system that allows the generator to only spin it one direction to make it a more efficient and robust, he adds.According to co-founder and CTO Alexander, SolePowers competitive advantage over similar devices that are trying to harness the power of walking is that instead of being embedded into a shoe, its a removable shoe insole. Being an insole and not a shoe it gives us much more versatility in the sense that we can put it in a sandal for use in developing nations or sell it to the boot company and put in boots for soldiers, she says.SolePower is waterproof and weather-resistant and its current simulations and calculations indicate one insole will last three years of walking, which means an average daily person walking 2.5- 5 miles a day. The company is working toward a product that will charge an iPhone or a similar smartphone in 2.5 miles. We are pricing it around the same as other solar tech products - around $130 per device - then we will go to outdoor retailers to start selling to consumers, says Stanton.Shrinking things down to a size that would make it usable was the biggest technical challenge while designing the insole, according to Stanton. We are pretty much past that one. Now getting it to market and making it mass manufacturable are the two big hurdles on the horizon, he says. The SolePower team (L to R) Elliot Kahn, Matt Stanton, Hahna Alexander, and Davit Davitian. Image SolePowerEngineer to EntrepreneurFinding a good mentor is essential for any engineer considering being an entrepreneur. Both Stanton and Alexander acknowledge the guidance they received from their mentors at the startup incubator AlphaLab. We are both engineers so we didnt know how to run the financials or put a business plan together. The mentors opened our eyes to what was coming our way, says Stanton.Especially when you are hitting your head against the wall going the wrong route, you need a mentor to steer in the correct path, Alexander reiterates. Another lesson that she learned along the startup road is talking to customers early on in development than later. They told us we should make it the insole more aesthetically pleasing and that helped as until then we werent thinking in that direction.Currently working out of TechShop in Pittsburgh, PA, the SolePower team is plugging away to improve the design of the insole. We design, produce, and manufacture ourselves. That allows us to rapidly iterate and do it very cheaply. It also makes us understand the manufacturing aspect of it, says Alexander, adding that the product has to be comfortable so we are solving every technical challenge. Weve talked with local podiatrists to make sure SolePower doesnt affect the way people walk.As the SolePower te am continues to evaluate and refine their product, next time your cell phone runs out of battery, consider taking a power walk.Being an insole and not a shoe it gives us much more versatility in the sense that we can put it in a sandal for use in developing nations or sell it to the boot company and put in boots for soldiers.Hahna Alexander, CTO, SolePower

The Anatomy of a Leader #infographic - Spark Hire

The Anatomy of a Leader infographic - Spark HireAs hiring manager, you may not always be looking to hire leaders. Sometimes you need to hire those that are willing to be part of a team directed by one or two strong leaders. In fact, a team full of leaders may actually be counter-intuitive. Too many chefs in the kitchen However, when you are looking to hire a leader, you want to be sure you are looking for the right characteristics. Sometimes you can spot a leader from afar in the hiring process, but other times you may have to dig a little deeper to pull out those leadership qualities. In this infographic, you can take a look at what qualities the guys over at the Academy of Leadership and Management deem as leadership qualities. The top quality that seems to make a leader is motivation. When someone is highly motivated to succeed and be great at what they do, they may just become the leader of the pack driving others to do the same. On the flip side, intellect does not a leader make. One can be extremely intellectual and knowledgeable, but still not have the right stuff to make them a leader. Take a look at what else seems to make a leader and start looking for those qualities in your candidates if need be.IMAGE Courtesy of Visual.ly
